Blue Genie Art Bazaar — should have biked

A yearly tradition among one of my groups of friends is a gift swap. Operating on the same type of principles as a “White Elephant” gift swap except that these are gifts that people actually want. Some of the interesting gifts over the years have included a a bust of a political figure, a Chewbacca stuffed doll, a beta fish and a squatty potty. Every year, I try to come up with something unique within the budget guidelines. Blue Genie Art Bazaar looked like a great (free entrance) place to shop for one-of-a-kind items by local artists.

I thought that Blue Genie was far out of the way, so I drove instead of biked. Coming from the north, I turned onto Airport Boulevard from Lamar and drove along a beautiful two-way bike lane. Turning onto Denson Drive was another bike lane! Blue Genie is on the corner of Denson and Dillard Circle. Blue Genie’s parking lot was full; and, the street parking on Dillard Circle was also packed. Another reason to bike instead of drive.

This is only the second holiday market that I’ve visited in Austin this year. However, Blue Genie was much larger than the other one. There are five rows of work set up through the building with a large variety of options. Anything from t-shirts with fun sayings to jewelry to paintings and prints to glass nightlights to plant holders to lamps made out of re-purposed machinery. Depending on your spending habits, maybe you will need to drive. 🙂
